Aaron Traffas: Hello and welcome to Purple Wave’s Auction Podcast. My name is Aaron Traffas. We’re conducting a retirement auction for HWA Davis Construction and Supply of Newton, Kansas. Bidding for the construction equipment in this auction is open now and will close on December 27. I’m speaking this morning with Bob McBride, Purple Wave’s territory manager who’s been running point on this auction. Good morning, Bob, and thanks for joining me.

Bob McBride

Bob McBride: Good morning, Aaron.

AT: Tell me about HWA Davis. What kind construction work do they do and how long have they been in business?

BM: Well, HWA Davis has been in business about 25 years. They specialize in road and highway drainage projects.

What made them decide to retire?

Well, at this point in their life, Mike and Linda, the owners, they just wanted to slow down and have some time to travel and enjoy one another outside the business atmosphere while they still could. That was the reason they decided to have an auction and liquidate the business at this time.

There are other ways to move heavy equipment. Why did they decide to have an auction?

Sure. Well, I think one of the big points was the date-certain time of sale. To be able to pick a date where everything would be sold and be sold fairly, you know, to high bidder, and not carry this over with no end determined through a private sale — this way everything will be sold on December 27, moved out within a couple weeks following that time, and they could move on with their plan to retire.

Why did they specifically choose Purple Wave?

We’ve actually done work for them in the past. We’ve sold some equipment for them over the last few years on consignment. Previous relationship with them — they’ve had good success with us. We’ve done well with their equipment. They’ve always sold decent items through us, so we’ve had good success. We’re happy that they chose us to handle their final sale and liquidation retirement auction. We expect to have a good auction for them on the 27th of December.

Well, let’s talk about the inventory. Tell me the types of equipment we’re selling. What kind of shape is it in? Go ahead and highlight some of the key pieces, if you would.

2013 Caterpillar 321D LCR excavator

Sure. Well, we’re selling heavy construction equipment, from heavy to light equipment, tools, fleet vehicles, et cetera. They have several really nice pieces of equipment — low houred. One that I’d like to highlight is their 2012 Caterpillar 924K wheel loader. This is really a nice unit. Like I said, it’s a 2012, but to stand on the ground and look at it, boy, it just looks like even a much later model machine. It’s just really in good condition — just a little over 2000 hours — just a real clean unit that hasn’t been used really hard. They also have a 2013 Caterpillar 321D LCR excavator. This is also a really low-houred nice piece. Very clean — 2300 hours, more or less — engine hours. Again, just a really clean piece — auxiliary hydraulics — ready to go to work the day you take it home. Another piece I’d like to mention is their 2013 Case 580 Super N WT backhoe. It’s a four-wheel drive unit with extend-a-stick and extend-a-hoe on it. It’s got a couple extra buckets that are going to go along with it. We also have a pair of couple nice Case excavators. A 2007 CX225 SR — again, for the age, fairly light usage, low hours — 5000 hours on that machine. We have the other Case, a 2005 CX160 excavator. Again, for its age, pretty low hours — 6700 hours — good condition on it. You know, all this equipment was being used day in and day out in the organization, so this equipment’s coming right off the jobs and ready to go to work. Have a 2015 Caterpillar 236D skid steer. This one only has 534 hours on it, and, again, to stand on the ground next to it it looks clean and ready to go to work. I mean just very little wear and tear at all on it — again, only 500 hours, more or less, on that machine. So they have, you know, just a host of other support equipment. We’re selling several fleet trucks, pickup trucks — there’s trailers from light-duty cargo trailers, supply trailers, jobsite trailers, gooseneck equipment trailers. We also have a lowboy trailer that we’re going to be selling. They’ve got a Kenworth tractor truck with a wet kit that will be in the sale. And then all of your support-type equipment that you can imagine — a 2007 Ingersoll Rand 185 two-behind air compressor. We have welders, field equipment, laser levels, cut-off saws, general tools, et cetera. We’ve got a pretty nice barrel-type end-dump trailer, it’s a 2007, again, just coming right off the jobs — they’ve been using every day. And then we’ve got some piping and supply equipment. Like I mentioned, they were in the drainage business. That was their primary focus, doing road and highway drainage projects. So we some piping, both concrete and plastic piping, that we’ll sell in bulk that will sell in group lots that will be offered as well. And that pretty much covers it. It’s just a good selection of equipment, from very heavy, like I said, the big wheel loaders and big excavators, right on down to your small shop tools and support equipment.

We always encourage our bidders to take a look at everything before placing bids. To that end, we have the open inspection scheduled on December 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. What kind of assistance and information can someone expect by attending that open inspection?

Purple Wave will have staff on site December 17 to answer any auction-specific questions, if you need to establish a customer account to bid, et cetera. We’re there to help. Of course HWA Davis will have staff on the ground so that you can hear machines run, ask any item-specific questions regarding condition, et cetera. But yes, we’ll have a full crew on the ground to accommodate you on the open house dates.

If someone doesn’t learn about the auction until after the open house or that date doesn’t work, how difficult would it be to take a look at something after Monday?

Sure. No, they’re available. I would just encourage potential bidders that aren’t able to attend the open house to just contact Mike Davis for inspection. He’s the owner. His number’s listed on our website. You can look those items over by appointment Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. But again, please call and make sure to give them a heads-up and I’m sure they could have someone on the ground to accommodate you to look the items over if you’re unable to make the open house next Monday, December 17.

Well let’s talk about after the auction. You mentioned earlier that HWA Davis is expecting this equipment to be gone in a couple of weeks. After a buyer has made payment to Purple Wave within 48 hours, what specific removal timeline will he or she be looking at and what kind of load-out assistance can be expected?

Well, buyers will have roughly until the middle of January to retrieve their items and get them picked up. Again, just like the inspection times, it would be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will have staff on the ground to help load. Obviously, to load out the heavy concrete piping and any of the larger pieces of equipment that would need to be picked up and set on a trailer, they would assist with that. And, of course, assist with any starting of vehicles, et cetera.

Well, Bob, is there anything else you’d like to mention about this auction?

Well, yes. I certainly want to mention that at this time of year there’s an opportunity to benefit from some tax savings through bonus depreciation and the section 179 by purchasing used equipment for your business. You know if you’re going to purchase equipment, you might as well purchase good equipment. We certainly have a nice offering of clean, low-houred, light-used equipment here offered at the HWA Davis Construction & Supply retirement auction. Of course there’s a number of other things that will sell as well, but it’s really a nice offering, very clean. I mentioned the highlight pieces offered in the auction. Those are just really — it’s not very often that you get the opportunity to buy such later model equipment, very, very low hour in good condition. So this sale is certainly worth taking a look at. If you have an interest and need for some of the equipment that they have offered here.

I’ve been speaking with Bob McBride, Purple Wave’s territory manager for Wichita, about the retirement auction for HWA Davis Construction & Supply that will close the last week of December. Thanks again, Bob, for joining me this morning.

Thank you, Aaron.
